XK Club Round Britain Coastal Drive 2017 for Prostate Cancer UK - Stage 1

Twyford Moors restored Jaguar XK140 at BeaulieuA few weeks ago, Ian and Harry took part in the first stage of the XK Club Round Britain Coastal Drive 2017. This wonderful event was organised to raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer UK and is the brain child of XK club founder Philip Porter. To find out more about the whole event and to donate to this excellent cause please click here. So far over £34,000 has been raised for Prostate Cancer UK by this event so please donate and help reach the target of £50,000.

The first stage ran from Beaulieu in Hampshire to just south of Exeter, following the coast as much as possible. Clearly a costal route initially conjures up images of sweeping roads overlooking sparkling sea which we were able to Jaguar XK Club at Beaulieu for RBCDenjoy on the latter half of the first stage however we first needed to get though Bournemouth, Poole and some very busy roads indeed. Once out into Dorset properly we enjoyed some truly stunning driving on open country roads and twisting lanes. Many of the smaller coastal towns were challenging with traffic and steep hills, Lyme Regis springs to mind!

This was the first significant trip for the Twyford Moors XK140 and I am pleased to report that it performed perfectly. It was an education to get out and use an XK in the same manner as many of our customers use them. We gained a real appreciation for how the upgrades fitted to this Jaguar XK120, XK140 and XK150car improve the driving experience, particularly in the small towns. The weather was excellent and very hot so we made much use of the cooling fan. The five speed gearbox was a joy to use, particularly being able to slip in into first gear in traffic and on steep hills, and made cruising on the odd stretch of duel carriageway very relaxing. The electronic power steering made for a relaxing drive and being able to switch it on for parking and off for the open road is a handy feature. The only fault we had with the car was a failed brake light switch but we were lucky enough to be provided with a spare by one of our customers (thank you Nigel!). Brake light switches have been a real problem over recent years but we now have an upgrade available, our XK140 was one of the last cars we restored with the older type switch.

Patrick Hanratty in his Jaguar XK120 OTSIn addition to Ian and Harry taking part in the Twyford Moors fully restored XK140 (click here for full details of the restoration) many other Twyford Moors restored and maintained XKs took part in the event. In particular we would like to congratulate Patrick Hanratty who was one of the few drivers who "went all the way" completing the whole trip around the coast of the UK in his XK120 OTS.

Philip, Louise, Julie and the whole team at the XK Club have done a wonderful job putting this event together and it is great to see the car being used for such a good cause. Congratulations to all those involved!
