Dyslexia Awareness Week 2024

Today is the last day of Dyslexia Awareness Week 2024. Apparently, as many as 3.3 million adults in the UK workforce are dyslexic, and many are undiagnosed. What I know for sure is that two members of our team, myself (Harry) and Jonny, are dyslexic. I also have many other friends and colleagues in the classic car sector who are dyslexic.

Dyslexia can manifest in many different ways, but I believe that for every weakness dyslexia gives you, it also provides a contrasting strength. As an employer, being aware of the challenges associated with dyslexia allows us to make reasonable adjustments to working life to accommodate these.

Speaking from personal experience, I struggled with reading and writing at school but excelled in mathematics, science, and engineering. This led me to a career working with my hands and fixing classic cars. I was fortunate to have fantastic support for my dyslexia throughout school, university, and my working life. Despite the issues I’ve faced and the challenges I still have with the written word, I now write all the content you read on our website, social media, and print adverts—so please excuse the occasional error!

Stepping up to do this has been one of the biggest challenges of my life and has meant facing many of my worst fears, from public speaking to being confronted with written mistakes I’ve made. However, with the support of my colleagues, the classic car community, my family, and everything I’ve learned over the years, the content we create here has become hugely popular.

If you're struggling due to dyslexia or any learning disability, know you're not alone. There is support available, and there are careers that will suit you. The British Dyslexia Association is a great place to start.
