This Series 1 E-Type was originally exported to the USA via Jaguar Cars New York and delivered to Houston Texas. It is understood that it remained in Texas during its life in the States before being imported back into the UK in the early 1990’s. The bodyshell was in perfect condition having spent its life in a dry climate though the interior had suffered due to the Texan heat.
When it was brought back to the UK the car underwent extensive restoration work including being retrimmed in red and being converted from left to right-hand. The front and rear suspension were also fully rebuilt and the engine was rebuilt by a notable specialist. The bodywork was in such good condition owing to the car having spent its life in a dry state that it only required a respray.
The car has since been maintained impeccably. The impressively thick history file documents all the work carried out on the car since it returned to the UK as well as holding a record of the mileage the car has covered. Over the past 30 years the car has covered just over 24,000 miles and, as can be seen from the photos, still looks stunning. Having been resprayed a few years ago there are a few imperfections in the paint as one would expect but the overall appearance of the car is stunning and the bodywork is clearly in very sound condition.
I would argue that the 4.2 Series 1 E-Type is the best of the range to drive. The torquey 4.2 XK engine combined with the all-synchro gearbox is an absolute joy and this car is a fine example of why I like them so much. The ride is supple and compliant without being soft and, as we all know, E-Types are just a delight to weave through winding country roads. The practicality and drivability of this car combined with the striking looks of the Series 1 coupe with its enclosed headlights and elegant indicators make this a very appealing car indeed.
