This Jaguar XK140 is a genuine UK, right-hand drive Special Equipment car. It was first sold by the Wellbeck dealership in March 1955 to Alpherson Products of Suffolk. Alpherson Products was owned by brothers Sam and Henry Alper, who were best known for manufacturing the popular Sprite caravans. I rather enjoy the idea of this lovely XK140 pulling a Sprite caravan back in the 1950s, although there are no signs that this car ever had a tow bar fitted. Being an SE car, it came from the factory with wire wheels and an overdrive gearbox.
In the early 2000s, the car received a full nut-and-bolt restoration here at Twyford Moors Classic Cars Ltd. There are photographs in the history file showing the restoration, with the body removed from the chassis and the car stripped right back. As part of the restoration, the car was extensively upgraded, including bucket seats, inertia-reel seat belts, a pedal box, front disc brakes, a five-speed gearbox, a fast-road engine with 2" carburettors, an electric cooling fan, an aluminium radiator and more.
Having covered almost 40,000 miles since its restoration – approximately 1,650 miles per year – this car has been used, enjoyed and maintained. We love cars like this because, despite inevitably showing some signs of age, they are generally immensely usable and reliable.
Finished in British Racing Green with a Biscuit interior, this car looks stunning. The addition of a chrome luggage rack and leaper on the bonnet gives the car a period touring-car feel. The bucket seats, pedal box, smaller steering wheel and inertia-reel seat belts make it a very comfortable car to travel in.
To drive, this car is well-mannered and confidence-inspiring. It would make an ideal touring car. With its well-considered suite of upgrades, it is very capable of covering long distances in comfort and will think nothing of modern traffic. The engine is eager, the gear change is swift and the ride is very comfortable.
