Originally dispatched to Henlys of London, this Jaguar XK120 Drophead Coupé was built in October 1953. It is an original UK, right-hand drive car – one of just 295 examples produced. Pleasingly, the car still retains its original colour scheme of black with a red interior.
The extensive history file contains records dating back as far as 1961, including a continuation log book showing the car was sold by Swanmore Motors to a Mr Miles. A letter from Mr Miles dated 1982 states that the car was in “beautiful condition at the time”. It appears he sold the XK120 after two years in order to purchase an XK150. The car then went into storage for some time until the 1980s, when it underwent a comprehensive restoration. This restoration is well documented by numerous invoices in the history file.
Today, the car presents as a very nice, drivable example. The quality of the paintwork remains a testament to the restoration, with a deep shine that still impresses despite some cracks, marks and imperfections acquired over the decades. The interior is in good order, with the leather nicely aged.
This XK120 is a pleasure to drive, with a five-speed gearbox that allows swift progression through the gears and relaxed cruising at motorway speeds. Front disc brakes provide reassuring stopping power, complemented by a well-considered upgrade in the form of an electric cooling fan. Inside, colour-matched inertia seatbelts with period-style buckles add both safety and style, making this a practical choice for touring or navigating busy roads.
This is a delightful XK120 that is ready to be enjoyed. The addition of sensible upgrades strikes a fine balance between originality and usability.
