Here we have an original UK, right-hand drive Jaguar XK140 drophead coupe in for sale. The car was originally sold by H Webb of Hornchurch to a Mr John Young of Surrey in November 1955. By 1966 it was owned by Mr G P Dale of St Albans. In 1988 Mr Dale sold the car to the current owner as a restoration project. The car underwent a full nut and bolt restoration in 1990 with Autech Classic Cars Ltd. This restoration is recorded in the history file along with a collection of photographs. The car has covered less than 9000 miles since this restoration.
This XK140 has been off the road for some years and has just been recommissioned for the road. The restoration undertaken 30 years ago was completed to a high standard and the car remains in good condition. Given the passage of time, the car possesses the charming patina of age but is very presentable and useable.
Mechanically the car was restored to original specification with drum brakes and the original four-speed gearbox. The engine (a 3.4 S-Type unit) starts and runs beautifully with good oil pressure. The car pulls along nicely and the Moss gearbox is in good condition. The drum brakes are effective but do remind you that you are driving a 1950s car. Overall, this is a wonderfully original car to drive and delivers that period feel.
This car would be ideal for those looking for 1950s authenticity. Alternatively, it would be a great starting point for a driver looking for a more upgraded car. Being a sound and well-built car, it could easily be upgraded to the buyer's desired specification with anything from a five-speed gearbox to disc brakes.
